These people are simply mentally unwell. It's far easier to see this with a simple IBE (inference to the best explanation) which you've already deployed quite well, but startbwith the belief in demons and Satans and such imaginary enemies. What philosopher of psychiatry Carol Gould has called culltural disorders and the high epidemiological prevalence of the religious schizophrenia (it's a global pandemic) means that we've come to accept absurd, deranged claims about belief in demons hunting people being sane beliefs. They're obviously unhinged deranged beliefs.
